As we barrel into 2024, there are a handful of games slated to release next year that I’m very excited about! Below are 5 upcoming video games that I’m looking forward to in 2024 and beyond. I will give you a brief synopsis of what we know about each game thus far and tell you why you should be excited for it too!
Game: The Plucky Squire
Developer: All Possible Futures
Platforms: PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC
Synopsis: Players embark on a grand and humorous journey through a vibrant and enchanting kingdom. As the plucky squire, you'll face a series of comical challenges and encounters, all while honing your skills and forging unlikely friendships. The game offers a delightful mix of action, puzzle-solving, and exploration, with a dash of humor and heartwarming storytelling. With its colorful, hand-drawn art style and a soundtrack that perfectly complements the whimsical atmosphere, The Plucky Squire appears to deliver a truly enchanting and light-hearted gaming experience!
The Plucky Squire reminded me of a game I played in 2022 called RPG Time: The Legend of Wright which was another hand drawn video game that caught my eye. It is a very artistic game where it starts off with a pencil and paper, but then the pieces become three dimensional as they venture off the paper and onto the tabletop. This mix of mediums is appealing to me as it is rather unique. Not every game has to have hyper realistic graphics. This is a lovely change of pace and if you’re looking for a game that’s quite different than what you’re used to playing, then keep an eye out on The Plucky Squire!
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
Developer: Ninja Theory
Platforms: Xbox & PC
Synopsis: Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is an highly-anticipated video game that immerses players in a dark and psychologically intense world. This sequel to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice which continues the harrowing journey of Senua, a Celtic warrior plagued by severe mental health issues. Set in a beautifully realized, hauntingly atmospheric version of the Nordic wilderness, the game explores themes of trauma, myth, and the supernatural. As players venture through this nightmarish world, they will face not only physical challenges but also the demons of Senua's own mind. With stunning visuals, an innovative approach to storytelling, and intense combat, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 promises a unique and deeply emotional gaming experience.
This was announced years ago at The Game Awards and the trailer was so compelling that I immediately played Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice which was such a great game! I am eagerly awaiting this sequel! I’m hoping Senua finds peace in the chaos of her mind and I can’t wait to see how her story unfolds.
Spy x Family: Operation Memories
Developer: Groove Box Japan
Platforms: PS4/PS5, Switch, and PC
Synopsis: Based on the manga and anime, Spy x Family, the Forger family is set to make their video game debut! Players will experience the world through Anya's perspective as she must create a photo diary for her school assignment. They'll take memorable pictures of Anya during her adventures to places like beaches, dog parks, aquariums, and museums. There are over 15 mini-games that are based on scenes from the anime such as peanut-themed bowling and rhythm training with Yor which allows players to earn points and unlock costumes and outing items!
Spy x Family is one of my favorite series and I was ecstatic when this video game was announced! It may not be an action packed spy adventure, but experiencing the world with one of my favorite characters, Anya, sounds adorable and delightful. I never thought that Spy x Family would become a video game especially being as wholesome as playing as Anya, so I found this announcement during a Nintendo Direct to be very surprising! This may not be a game for everyone, but if you love the world of Spy x Family and want a break from a fast paced game, then this may be a game for you.
Developer: Ironwood Studios
Platforms: PS5 & PC
Date: February 22, 2024
Synopsis: This is a roguelike, first person driving survival game which feels extremely unique to the genre. As you journey through this surreal landscape, your car becomes your sole companion in a world teeming with various anomalies. As you navigate the world around you, you'll gradually piece together a long-forgotten enigma that lingers at the Olympic Exclusion Zone.
A roguelike car game seems very interesting as we haven’t seen anything like that before! The atmosphere seems eerie, but I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a horror game. In the last few years, I’ve been playing a handful of roguelike games. A mixture of roguelike and horror sounds very compelling to me! This is a title I’ll be keeping my eye on as we learn more about it in the months to come.
Silent Hill 2
Developer: Bloober Team
Platforms: PS5 & PC
Date: Tentatively 2024
Synopsis: This reimagined classic is set to deliver a deeply immersive and terrifying experience for both long-time fans and newcomers to the series. In Silent Hill 2, players will once again step into the shoes of James Sunderland as he embarks on a nightmarish journey to the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill. The game boasts a complete overhaul of the original graphics and audio, providing that heighten the sense of dread and unease. The remake promises to preserve the psychological horror and unsettling narrative that made the original a masterpiece while incorporating modern gaming technology to enhance the overall experience.
I am truly excited to dive into the world of Silent Hill 2 as I have heard much praise about it over the years! Unfortunately, I did not play this game when it was initially released. Surprisingly, I have managed to avoid spoilers throughout the years! Everyone says that Silent Hill pushed the horror genre forward and made it what it is today. I am looking forward to experiencing it first hand! I have heard that Silent Hill 2 is regarded as one of the best in the franchise which may have led to the decision to remake the second game and not the first game. With the horrendous launch of Silent Hill: Ascension, the franchise will be looking to win back the trust of its fans.
2024 is shaping up to be another great year for video games! These are 5 games that I have my eye on, but of course there are many more titles that will be released! Will these games make my top 5 of the year? Will some of these games be a flop? With many different titles releasing during this time, which are you most excited for?
